King Philip the Second

 

  • Philip II, King of Spain,was born at Valladolid on the 21st of May 1527. 
  • He was the son of the emperor Charles V, and of his wife Isabella of Portugal, who were first cousins.


 

An Imposing Monarch

  • Philip ruled from 1556 until 1598, during this time he expanded Spanish influence, strengthened the Catholic Church and made his power absolute.

 

  • Philip was an absolute monarch, that he had complete authority over the government and peoples lives, and believed that he ruled by divine right, that is believing that god gave him the authority to rule so he enforced religious unity.

 

  • He lived in his Palace the Escorial, outside Madrid, which was a church, a residence and a tomb for members of the royal family, which reflected his character.

  • Philip advanced Spanish Catholic power throughout the world by fighting many wars.

 

  • The Netherlands, the richest part of Philips empire, had many riots from both Catholic and Protestant groups in the 1560, so largely protestant lands declared independance and became known as the Dutch Netherlands while the rest, mostly catholic provinces, remained part of the Spanish Empire.

 

  • In the 1580s Philip sent an Armada to England to stop the English invasion, but on its way in the English Channel a storm blew and scattered the Armada.
