Spain and the Hapsburg Empire





  • In 1492, Spain seized part of America by having Queen Isabella of Spain finance Columbus's voyage.
  • In the 1500's Isabella and Ferdinand of Spain enforced religious unity by kicking out the last Muslim rulers.

  • In 1519 Charles V, grandson of Ferdinand and Isabella, became king of Spain and the Hapsburg's.
  • Charles continued fighting with France over Italy.
  • After a couple of years German princes were allowed to choose their own religion because Charles was forced to do so.
  • Charles wanted to take over the Ottoman Empire, but they were too strong and the Ottomans challenged Spanish power in the Mediterranean.
  • In 1556 Charles gave up his titles and gave the Hapsburg lands to Ferdinand his brother and the rest to his son Philip, which at that time was only 29.
